I just bought a crepe myrtle from Lowe's to bonsai. The trunk is about 1" thick. I want to chop it down to make a miniature bonsai leaving about 6" and 3 to 4 branches. Is now a good time of year to do this?

I've worked on a tree farm where Crepe Myrtles were one of the biggest sellers. During that time I've seen them get run over buy 18 wheelers and ripped from the ground and they keep coming back. They do like to bud out from old wood and will also send out new shoots from the roots that you will have to trim back. So I guess to answer your question grab the loppers and go for it.
