I understand what you want to do (think) .... but I have small problem with perception this sentention " Please don't post here:
progression sequences on trees that are finished " .

One friend who gives here a lot of suplies once upon time said me , when I said sentence "that bonsai is finished" : "What is finished bonsai ? You know ...... bonsai is never finished , bonsai is still on way....bonsai is way"

.......and now i know he has very absolut pure true ... bonsai is never finihed

Very Happy

The above question was asked in relation to a comment (now amended) on the Sticky that goes with the Bonsai Discussion forum.

Because there are so many different languages represented on IBC I had felt that the word "finished" would be understood by most in the context. We all appreciate that a bonsai is never truly "finished" and the term in the context merely was to distinguish between a progression sequence that only showed three of fours steps along the way as opposed to those where a tree had reached the image the creator had set out to achieve.

But please, do feel free to enter into a general discussion on whether bonsai are ever really finished or not.

Maybe "show ready" would be a better expression?

hi,

I believe they are actually finished quite often. Because they are a plant that will grow you could get all hippy or Zen and say they can never be finished, but we are talking about the actual individual bonsai here so often they reach a form of completion.

As an artist you work a tree, style it, refine it and pot it into the image you invisaged - this is a finished bonsai from the artists' point of view if they are just maintaining it from now on
You may sell it to another who sees a new form in the material - they restart the cycle until their version or vision is finished. A beautifully sculpted and refined tree may then remain in that form for decades. A finished tree is a personal thing so all our trees become finished once they reach the desired form

Photoshop is a great tool for making your material trees into 'finished trees'. once the two images match up you've reached the stage i'm talking about

tree today (not finished as refining and growing to go still) and my photoshop plan of my personal finished tree

this one nearly finished - main form is there but refining is ongoing

And this one I class as nearly finished as I'm now just maintaining and tweaking the design each year but not changing size or design

lots of the display shohin are finished too - certainly the owners would class many of their black pines and curly junipers as done I would think - if you attend a show and see a tree the same as it was last time you saw it then it is finished in its owners mind i guess

That sums it up very nicely for me.

Note to self...do not go to a great show or exhibition until you have world class trees. Dorothy, I will most likely never go to any great show now!!! geek

Marcus,

Of course I was only kidding and plan on going to as much as I can (time, venue, and funds permitting). I already go to various blogs and forums so that part is covered Wink.

haha, yes I know, but 1000's read these threads and it is good for the hobby to point everyone in the right direction - our learning should never stop.
