Marvellous, Jun. Is this one going into your show in May? If so, I hope you have some good buddies on standby to help you lift it. Maybe the giant bunny rabbit on the right peak will be away by then though. Laughing

Just my two cents worth: the only thing that I'd comment on is that IMHO the massiveness of the trunk on the right side tree is throwing the proportions a little. As I say, it's just how my eye is seeing it, and if it were mine I would be trying to mask it partially maybe with some other foliage or moss immediately in front of it. Just MHO on that one wee bit though - the overall impression remains stunning.

Jun,

This is my comment (just based on how I see it on this picture).

If possible, reduce the dead wood at the right further back where you carved it. I will definitely remove the bigger branch at the left of that carved area as well. It is very smooth and straight and it doesn't help the tree from my point of view.

Hi Fiona.

Thanks!
Yes I am planning to include this composition on May, if it will get matured enough by then...The only good thing is that I will be the head of the bonsai venue committee, So therefore by the power vested in me, I'll abuse that it and ask the other guys involved in the arrangement to carry the whole thing for me... Smile Twisted Evil The first island on the right side can be carried by two guys, the right side island by 3 persons, so I guess, I'll be asking six gentlemen to carry this part...but remember this is not finish yet,,,Robert's "Super large penjing" gave me an Idea . I was thinking of adding more smaller Islands at the right side and at the back, to complete the perspective and depth.

Yes Fiona, your observation is correct. as of now the two trees are actually competing too. same reason why I need more depth on the image. Thanks, and we'll see in a a few more days.

Just noticed the little fisherman fella under the tree. He is out of proportion to the chap in the boat going between the two islands. But I guess you know that and are working on it.

....Now you got it wrong Fiona.

The guy fishing on the cliff under the tree is a Caucasian while the boatman is an Asian. They are perfectly proportioned. Razz Smile This is a far view composition so the facial details are not that clear.

Pardon me again Pavel.

Do you mean like, something or a small rock should still appear on the left side right after the Big rock? If that is the case, this group of island is acting as the foreground/ the nearest Island to the viewer. adding a separate rock on the left side will throw the proportion out, unless a new rock is located at the back most area.

AAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAA This comment made my day.....dare I say my week. That reply was just awesome. Just like your composition...in my humble, beginner opinion.

I agree with Fiona in that maybe your trees distort the scale a little bit, but to me it's still a believable composition.

Great job Jun. And keep the funny comments coming, as well as you great creations.

Pavel brings up a great point. Also Jun, where can one find rocks like these? Is there a source in the US anyone is aware of?

Thanks

Oh! yes Pavel I understand now your point. Yes that is right. Phempis acidula with that size won't survive as bonsai, more over hanging in the rock like that.
But, I saw that one coming, In the other thread Rob asked me why I did not cut the ugly left lower branch. and I told him I am planning to make a shrub on that area where you (Pavel) suggested using the left lower branch.

Thank you Sam.

Same answer as I said to Pavel.

I am not sure if it this kind of rock is available in the US. This kind of rock got a hard outer layer like a shell, and softer in the inside. That is why we can carve the rock easily, for design purposes and to lessen the weight. then we left it alone in a shaded area for it to matured, then the moss will naturally grows on it and the color will also changed. If you would look at the pictures, there are newly carve areas of the rock with yellowish color/beige. In just 3 weeks it will get matured again.

hi Jun,
you have been given many types of advice about your planting!!! Very Happy
I like it- and as a penjing it is believable and good - it is making me smile to read the comments as some seem to be confusing your penjin scene with a single bonsai planting - and as you know the two are quite different aspects of a similar hobby.

if a person was to pick fault on purpose the big white man is on a rock that should be closer to the viewer than the boat, as the left island is closer to the viewer (the tree is in front of rock on right) but it makes no real difference to the entire planting - and to me two trees do not create a pleasing balance - but again this is personal choice and does not effect this excelent planting.

I think the flow from one tree to the other is perfect, but is spoilt by the massive bulk of bare rock in the middle of the scene - and the middle is the place that draws the eye - a third tree on the rock face would balance the scene for me................but i am caucasion cheers , make classic single trees Razz and know nothing of the technique of penjing so my advice is just personal.

cheers and well done - the trees are very detailed for a new planting

Thanks Marcus.
Yes, penjing must not be confused with regular bonsai planting... With penjing it is more complicated. other than the detail of trees our eyes should learn to evaluate the essence of perspective and depth which is the most important aspect of creating a believable landscape/penjing. then not all trees good for bonsai can be used in penjing.
With the two trees out of proportion (at the moment), in the future this illusion will be addressed by creating smaller foliage pads for the tree in the right side and bigger with more detailed pads and much visible branch for the foreground trees, I remember from somewhere a thread regarding "far view and near view". applying those techniques in penjing helps a lot in creating depth difference in trees assumed to be near and far. Hans gave a very good example very useful in solving perspective illusion.

Thank you John.

I make sure that the total volume of the original pot is the same as the the new planting area in the rocks, for all the original roots to fit in. Phempis are very delicate trees. The rock you can see in the pictures above are Not solid rocks. They were joined/cemented together to create big planting space in the middle, but for the other tree species just hollowing out the rocks will do the trick. Then taking care of the trees were done the same way potted trees were taken care of. With lot of waters, fertilizer and tons of love! Wink
