This is Zanthoxylum not sure about the sub-species bit, but you can get this plant to grow on your side as Zanthoxylum beecheyanum [ Sichuan pepper ]

Note, at this size of height 9 inch [ 23 cm ] x width 12 inches [ 30 cm ] trunk of 1 inch plus [3 cm or so ]
Two situations - tree needs 0.5 inch [ 1.5 cm ] for an elegant trunk or 0.8 inch [ 2 cm ] for a stout trunk.
Where 1 inch [ 2.5 cm ] trunk to 6 inches [ 15 cm ] of height for a graceful tree or 1 inch [ 2.5 cm ] to 5 inches [12.5 cm ] for a stout and more masculine tree.

2nd situation, at this height, the tree is at it's maximum branching / branchlet capacity, as I am finding here and there, dead points where shoots did not emerge.
So I am beginning the removal from not important areas of the design to encourage growth elsewhere.

Quality of branch placement as opposed to quantity of branch placement, and low dependence on fertiliser for extra branching [ artificial situation which I believe to be bad for the tree as it ages.]

A possible future - 5 to 10 years.
With time the angular will soften to more natural curves.
Looking at airspaces to preserve [ negative space ] and also how few branches might be needed.

By the way, this is a very beautiful zanthoxylum of yours! This species (zanthoxylum piperitum) is also found here in the local bonsai market, but they are of a low quality, if I may say..., you know chinese bonsai-mills...

you are most welcome. I also have a elm version put aside as well, for another 3d display - ha ha.

I see we have one of these zantho..... as a lumber tree, so I am going to check for maximum trunk size.

It's a new species, that I didn't even know existed in China or worldwide, so I have been putting it through the standard controlled tests. Wound repair, density of branches, responses to light, fertilizer,
and so on. The idea with a new tree is study and at a later point bonsai.

Well this tree looks like a good candidate, and on the older branches the thorns fall off, or can be helped of.

You might wish to try one, perhaps just grow for trunk size and root spread. It resprouts well. I hope to go searching the drains after Christmas for a 3 or 4 inch stump, left behind by the weedwhackers.
