Juniper bugs-what are they?
I found these little buggers on a couple junipers yesterday...
What are they?
How do I control them?
Did you know they have greenish bug's blood when they are squshed?
Thanks...Ironman

Billy-Yes they ARE Paracoccus juniperi (juniper mealybug)
Thank you very much for the help.
I looked them up and the buggers are prolific in numbers and range.
I'm 'controlling' them by the squash method at the moment.
I've found eggs, juveniles, and adults on my young and old junipers and my dill in vegetable garden.
I may use the Nick Lenz approach for sucker bugs...squirt, squirt, sppppzzz...
...unless someone has a better approach.
Maybe a Mealybug Destroyer but that approach will take approx 3-6 weeks (+/-) with shipping, etc...

This mix might work, it will burn your mucus membranes (eyes, etc.) and maybe you hands, so if anyone mixes it up be careful, I would strongly suggest eye protection and latex gloves as minimum PPE.

AK and Billy,
Thanks again. I will take care and add PPE if I go this way...
OR, I can add a few more items and call it dinner!
I live in South Texas!

I'm gonna move this to the pests and diseases forum.
Rather than making your own concoction that would be VERY painful if gotten on your fingers and from there your eyes, just get (or make) a soap spray.

I asked a member of my local club and he gave me another formula (though the other one should also have a similar effect):
You can blend these....then strain...mix the liquid in a galon of water. I heard that the garlic helps with the ants.
I personally have high tolerance to spicy food so I´m not afraid of the hot peppers :p
But I would always use gloves when fumigating, specially if I am using chemicals as some are very toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. This and the fact that I have home pets makes me opt for organic stuff...just need to keep the pets away for a couple of hours. I´ll give this a try as we have a palm tree in the middle of the yard and I noticed over the weekend that there are many ants around it.
- head of garlic
- full onion
- two hot peppers

Thanks for moving to this section, Jim and thanks for all the help.
I have been checking everyday since posting and the little buggers seemed to have vanished.
I guess it had something to do with squashing every one I found.
I will try the soapy water approach if I find another outbreak...
