Nice trees, huge show, but why are so few trees displayed on stands as they should be?

*Well, for one, in a formal display situation, such as a show, trees look better on stands.
*Tradition -- Japanese and western -- I'm told it is a necessity in Kokufen and other large shows in Japan.
*Also, the ABS's Manual for Appreciating, Judging and Buying Bonsai notes that points are to be subtracted for trees not displayed on stands, trees not on appropriate stands, on stands in poor condition, etc., and
*Other than this one, in 40-some years I've never seen a show in which bonsai were not displayed on stands. These "stand" out because they're not -- and there are so many of them that are not.

Jim,
Speaking only for myself and not to be contrarian I do not ever feel that a bonsai must be shown on a stand, or with a scroll, or with an accent plant.

Beautiful show! Congrats.
Admittedly stands or mats do serve as a 'frame' or to set the tree apart from the background but I don't think that the reason for having them should be that tradition dictates. Also, not everyone that enjoys bonsai and wants to exhibit their trees can afford a stand or even source one. Sometimes or in some places it's hard enough to find a pot that's right for your tree. After all, it's about the trees.
Khaimraj, Some of those big trunks on the Wrightias look suspiciously like three trunks grafted together. (Nothing wrong with that.) But then I've never seen a natural, mature Wrightia. Maybe someone can clarify.

Art,
ask Jerry, he has been over there and would know for certain. All that said, my Wrightia, still needs some thickening. We have a nursery in La Vega, Gran Couva, that supplies them, so if you - need mmmmoooooorrrrreeeeeee Bonsai muh ha ha ha - you can have them -

Art, some of these Wrightias do look very much like multiple trunks put together. I can't remember ever seeing a Wrightia in nature in the ground. All were in pots of small to massive dimensions.

Beautiful trees. Very excellent growth and the size variation is typical of tropical species. The background appears to be cut out of the jungle. Is there good yamadori in the woods?
The first Wrigitii R. certainly looks like a multitree cutting (common with Ficus trees too). I call my Wrightii R. the tropical maple as it has the paired leaf shape, and smooth bark similar to maple trees but the Wrigthii R. has the added benefit of making very fragrant flowers.
BTW, the lack of Ficus trees in the show is interesting.
It's amazing how much the Beackea Frutescens resemble juniper bonsai. I'd like to get my hands on one of those along with a Mulberry specimen.

Jujur Atap (Sapu Sapu) or Beackea Frutescens is very difficult to take care for. Certainly, MAlaysian bonsai artists have managed to find the way to keep them in great shape.

The Buxus are beautiful. Does anyone know which species of boxwood this is? It looks a little like B. harlandii.

Penang Bonsai Show
I wasn't so disturbed by the bonsai without stands. Obviously the exhibitors couldn't get hold of them. What were more unfortunate were the trees exhibited on completely the wrong stands, and the fact that the tables were so overcrowded. Too bad the organizers couldn't either be more selective or scrounge up more tables. Reminds me of pictures of an early Israeli show a few years ago. They will improve.
I spoke to my Wrightia religiosa. It is pretty healthy, but under lights for the winter it grows very large leaves. It appears to be rather aggressive & keeps intimidating its neighbors, the Serissas.
