developing ramification for big red bougainvillea
this collected red bougainvillea (bougainvillea buttiana) is perhaps the best bougainvillea material I have in my collection. the trunk is mostly dead and very old. bougainvillea of this size and character are hard to find on kauai. starting with collection 6 years ago, the initial task was to build an upper trunk/branch structure compatible with the massive trunk. new branches were first wired to direct growth. as the greenwood hardened the wire was cut off. several years of clip and grow ensued to direct main branches and to promote branch thickness. recently, all the big branches were rewired to reinforce branch position. we are not where we want to be with branch thickness at this time. this is a work in progress with no end in sight. meanwhile, work is progressing on retaining , pruning and wiring selected new growth to promote ramification. this also is a work in progress with a distant horizon. to promote growth, the tree is defoliated every three months, new shoots are wired and positioned. three months later, the wire is removed, the tree defoliated and the process done again. today was such an occasion. sorry for the busy background.

Very Impressive!
Kauaibonsai, do you have to treat the whitewood ?
What do you treat it with if you do.
Thanks for showing.

yes I do. much of the brown wood is deadwood also. every three months or so, I saturate the deadwood with minwax wood hardener or teak oil. either works great. keeps the deadwood tight and strong. use a eye dropper. this works best.
best wishes from hawaii.
