I'm wondering the best method to get roots where they are needed.

I want to make two trees out of this beast.
One (#1)with straight but fat trunk and some dead wood on it and the other (#2) some sort of root over rock semi cascade.
If you have any other ideas how to make something out of this rose please don't hesitate to share your idea.

No experience air layering roses, but can you separate the two sections you want to keep with some roots on each. I am thinking that the cut location may produce roots, particularly if treated as a ground layer with a little rooting hormone and good media to keep it both moist enough with enough oxygen. i have been using a 50/50 mix of fine (1-3 mm) akadama and pumice this year and so far all of the layered sections are growing well after doing a really good scrape of the stem to remove the cambium. However, I still have at least a month before I Know if I was sucessful.

That was my first thought. Cut it in half.
#2 I probably can just cut of from the root ball. But #1 I would like to cut above the burl and root ball and that is the reason why I want to air layer it or ground layer.
