This tree just caught my eye and I'm tempted to buy

wondering on people's opinions and suggestions on its future potential.  could I fatten trunk some more and lower the canopy and bush out a bit?

no experience with beech

all suggestions appreciated

Yes you can, but not in that small pot, or not in any reasonable time.  You will do better in a wide, shallow grow box or better yet the ground.

And neither is it -- which is why you should plant it in the ground. It is still a baby.

I think with this size, as mentioned before, it's not worth trying to shape it. Unless you want a mame sized tree. Pinching will only slow the swelling process of your trunk, which is what you need. Stick it into the ground or a bigger pot with modern substrate and fertilize a lot let it grown unchecked and then hack back hard around mid May or mid July. Then let it grow and do it again mid August or so. It will only thicken up if you let it grow. If you pinch there will be photosynthetic material to contribute to the plant gaining energy and thus growing.

Good luck
