BAOBAB BONSAI- FEASIBLE STYLE?
This is a scene of Baobab tree in Africa- very useful tree .
There are other BAOBAB shapes such as seen in
MADAGASCAR.These tree are wonder of nature.
How can we incorporate such shapes in Bonsai.
Can we see if any one of our members tried such shape in Bonsai
[img][/img]
This is another BAOBAB shape- how far these are
feasible in Bonsai design can we have some insight?

or this one? looks UGLY!=BEAUTIFUL

They will not look like this in your lifetime. I am trying one, it has very large leaves and rampant growth.

I think the Baobab style is the root of all Sumo style trees.

Hi Soumya,
of the three pics that you have posted, the first one is Adansonia Digitata and the second and third ones are Adansonia Grandidieri. Boababs have always inspired me to try out a tree in that style independent of the material actually being Baobab or not. I do have one Adansonia Digitata with me and am trying to shape it in the Grandidieri style but I am years away from the desired shape. As suggested in this thread by Alex, Adenium obesum (which is easily available in India) is a good species to try out the Baobab style as the surface of Adenium looks like that of a mature baobab tree.
Jaco,
You seem to be succesful where I am miles away from. Good development of your trees and the design. Keep it up
Regards

Re: BAOBAB BONSAI- FEASIBLE STYLE?
Jaco,
could you show the trees with leaves. Years ago I was gifted with a pound [ 1/2 kilo ] of Andansonia Digitata (African Baobab) seed. I gave up on them because of the leaf size.
Also how tall are these trees ?
I am asking as I did years ago of I believe, Guy Guidry with Swamp Cypress, and his response was 3 feet [ 90 cm ] for optimum showing. [ not an exact quote , memory.]
Thanks in Advance.

Re: BAOBAB BONSAI- FEASIBLE STYLE?
Hi all
Those trees are not mine, I wish they were. They belong to club members and the pics were taken at exhibitions. They vary in size from probably 30cm to 80cm high. The leafs do not reduce much therefore they are displayed in winter without leafs.
Regards
The quality of this picture is bad. It is a landscape created with three small Baobab trees. Trees are about 15cm - 20cm high. Not mine either.
Two more trees in nature for inspiration. Note the eagles nest on the right on the first picture. The tree is in the north of South Africa.
This tree is in Luanda Angola at the offices of a construction site.

What kind of low temperatures do these trees tolerate? I know they're all different, depending on which kind of baobab, but they must have smiliarities as well?

They cannot take frost at all and in the dormant period they get no water at all. If watered they rot. In fact lots of growers take them out of their pots in winter, shake off all the soil and hang them indoors away from moisture and cold. They are only replanted once they show new growth.

I have a seedling about 3 ft high and skinny. Had a nicer one last year, but it rotted. I guess because I watered it. Oh well, try, try again.

Re: BAOBAB BONSAI- FEASIBLE STYLE?
I planted some baobab seeds this year that Steve Tolley brought back from S. Africa for me and 4 have germinated and are doing well..... What compost do you recommend for them and at what point should I bring them into the house to protect from the frosts. At present I have them in my polytunnel. I think your trees are fab!
Cheers,

You could try another plant that resembles some of the characteristics. This is a bursera fagaroides or I think some call it an elephant tree. http://www.google.com/search?aq=2&oq=bursera+&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=bursera+fagaroides
It is a caudiciform so it naturally grows a fat trunk. I was given this one by a friend and have been pinching back and letting it fill out and have been thinking of flattening the top now that it has something up there to work with.
