A Big Surprise Empty A Big Surprise

Post  MikeG Mon Aug 06, 2012 2:45 pm

Hi everyone.

Been a while since I had anything worth posting but thought I'd like to share this find.
Personally I'm not a big fan of Walmart. Questionable business ethics keeps me from shopping there as much as possible. But a while ago I popped in with my wife to get her new glasses and decided to take a quick peek at their gardening section, which is usually just a sad place, with little selection and wilted plants. But to my surprise they had two large Ficus. Crammed into tiny pots filled with peat, they were just labelled "Chinese Bonsai Plants" LOL. I decided I needed to save at least one. And at $149 cad for a 3 and a half foot tall, 9" base tree, I couldn't say no. Any tree of comparable size at local specialized bonsai nurseries would cost a fortune. After cutting back some root rot and getting into a larger pot with proper drainage it quickly started putting out some good growth.

I've decided that it is a bit too tall for my liking so I'm air layering the top. I should get a nice little, fat cutting off this.

I'll update after separation.

I would air layer or cut just above the first or second branch to get some taper.

Me too, but there are several other layers to take first. <g>

The shame of it is that there are people who have these in their homes who would happily give them away to a good home. You might have to trade a smaller nicer plant. (not a bonsai)

A Big Surprise Empty What a good find

I have never seen anything decent at my local Wal-mart (though I did get a nice Sago Palm there for 7 dollars) . This will be pretty sweet when all the air layers are done.
