Hi all, Collected the first one today and the second in late winter. Looking forward to see what they yield in the next few years.

Hi john, yeah I’m at it again. Good movement in the second but the first is considerably older, having been stunted for many years on a quarry site. In two year I will try and count the rings on large root cut but I recon it about 60+.

Hi Rui, I assume this question is directed at me and not John. It depends on the soil from which the tree was collected. Hawthorns don’t like too much root disturbance at one time, so ones I collect are kept with some original soil around the roots and planted in a substrate with similar drainage capacity to recover. Will be left for 2 years before all soil is washed away and a very free draining substrate is used. The first tree was collected from an area where it was growing in leaf mould and the second from a very thick clay soil.

Nice. The first one will be challenging if you decide to keep the left branch. I am sure someone else here can spot/see the great tree hiding there though. The second one looks much younger but have more potential or much easier to bonsai for me (being a newbie Wink).

More Hawthorns Empty Hawthorns are great at this time of year

Post  Guest Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:35 pm

I love Hawthorns and especially at this time of year. I call hawthorns a four season tree, they are great all year! BUT I love springtime where the foliage appears and it is vibrant green, the leaves are fresh and new. These photos were made this afternoon.

Starting on the 2nd of May I will be touring Europe, beginning with a presentation and workshop in Belgium, then on to the UBI event in Arco Italy, staying with Enrico Savini then on to Nik Rozman and then EBA event in Slovenia. I will be presenting the first 'Fat Guy' Hawthorn. So if you want to see it 'in the flesh' get to the shows.

Mr. Tickle,

Yours seems really amazing!
I am also a fan of hawthorns. There are plenty of these trees in mountainous sections of my region.
I plan to collect some more hawthorns next winter, but I am not sure where to put in my home because my balcony is almost full Smile

Your trees are so inspiring Tony. I one day hope to be able to see them in the flesh.

Just done a virtual of where I would like to take the first one. Any more ideas on where to go with it would be appreciated. Personally I would like to keep the upper section as it has the most character.
Thanks Sam

You keep managing to find some really nice specimens, I'm jealous. I wish I could keep collecting but it's going to be in the 90s for the next 5 months. Sad
