Anybody know when to collect oaks in Florida?

Post  PeacefulAres on Thu Apr 05, 2012 1:49 am

I have my eyes on a very large one, but I'm not sure when they should be collected. Are any of you familiar with what time would be the best?

My father, a native Floridian and the son of natives, always said between Christmas Day and New Years Day. Actually you want to shoot for the coolest time of year. The problem, besides temperature, when it comes to transplanting from the wild in Florida is that it is difficult to get a compact root ball, rather the roots go everywhere.
One suggestion is to condition the tree before collecting by digging a trench around the tree, as wide and deep as needed depending upon the size of the tree, fill the trench with good potting soil or sphagnum moss, allowing new roots to grow into the improved area, and then collecting after a few months.
This is not a good time.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking about doing, if the time was wrong.

EDIT: Do you think it would be acceptable to cut back the main trunk now, as well?
