Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has experience with using Minwax wood hardener to preserve dead wood, especially the one buried deep in soil which will be soaked in water quite often. Will minwax help much or it just does little?

Many thanks!

It won't hurt, but don't expect miracles. Wood under the soil that is constantly exposed to damp WILL rot.

MinWax wood hardener is primarily intended to slow down a softening of wood (as in decking) that is exposed to repeated wet/dry cycles. You are supposed to scour out all rotted wood, then treat the resultant hollow before filling it with some other MinWax product.

WELCOME!!!!

What Jim said. Not much experience with it yet but for exposed, dry areas, I think it helps a lot. The first one I applied it to looked shinny and later turned whitish but after couple of months, it looked like regular weathered wood...just harder. I will re-treat next year and see what happens.

By the way, keep the wood as dry as you can before applying to get the best result. Not sure how you can attain that on deadwood attached to a live tree though especially root area. scratch
