Here is a Yew which I bought from Tony Tickle just under a year ago. It recieved its first styling at the Burrs event in Bury Manchester November 11th.
The tree will take many years of repotting before it is positioned in its final pot due to the very long roots restricting it from been sunk in the pot.
Here are 3 images. The first is the tree in its current stage and the other 2 are virtuals from me and Tony Tickle.
The first image is an idea from myself, however i would like to bring the first pad on the left and the one above it a little bit closser to the trunk.
The second idea is from Tony. I realy like the second choice however I am open to sugestions and would like some further virtuals from other members on the forum.
I would also like a few sugestions for the final pot.
Thanks. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I quickly tried my idea for the future. Wink

Regarding the loong roots - a of suggestions 1. the root splitting and coiling technique. 2. Ground layering at the level desired and finally 3. root grafting.

I'd try number 2 first, then maybe 3 and if that doesn't work the root splitting/coiling technique.

hi,
this one looks like it started life in virtually the same way as one of mine - long lower roots, short upright reduced trunk. This one was planted as a semi cascade, using the long root as the trunk, the second root as jin. Here is a picture after the tree was wired for the first time and put in a bonsai pot after establishing in a plastic plant pot. Lots to do making the dead wood and jin lighter etc but the tree is resting atm after wiring. this planting angle also works well with yews like this if you like the semi cascade style.

the inspiring (for me) cascade yew that is the same layout (a root from one side used as the base of the trunk ) is this one - a large and as yet unstyled japanese Yew that resides at Willowbog.

I'll see if i can turn your yew on its side with PS cheers
here we are, trunk over, with a mop of unrefined foliage ready to form layers

Hi Mikey P
Thought I’d try something a little different, which was one of the ideas I think I remember been discussed on the video I sore of the tree at Burrs.

I really like mr. miyagi's virtual and vev's first virtual. I'll make an attempt to explain my reasoning though I'm guessing I might be better off leaving at personal preference, haha. I find myself liking the foliage of the apex and overall canopy higher up on the main trunk line. For whatever reason it seems more believable than forming a compact canopy so far down on the trunk line--though I'm not sure how it will turn out in reality based on the available live veins, etc. This also seems to improve the feel of taper somehow for me. Those two virts are both quite different in my opinion but somehow they both seem to improve the feel of taper in the trunk. Mr. Miyagi's virt seems a very possible creation given the current branch placement of the tree so I would go that route if it were my tree and I were forced to make a decision right now. However, it is not my tree (congrats on being the owner of this beauty) and seldom is there a rushed or forced decision to be made so I'm sure you will get it right. Overall, some very nice virtual ideas have been submitted and I look forward to seeing the tree's development!
