Incredible piece. What can you tell us about it as far as when it was collected and what your plan is?

Wow. Exciting tree!

Is there a reason why this species is rarely seen in American bonsai?

Cheers

It is only found in Arizona and New Mexico primarily. In fact this tree is actually a hybidized Jutah juniper and is 500+ years old. I understand that Ryan Oneal recently said that the One Seeds and the Rocky Mountain junipers were his upcoming preferred species (I may have his quote off a little bit). This tree was initialy found in 2001 and styled in the ground beginning in 2005 and the large roots were cut at the base of the trunk each of the next 4 years with alot of weekly and watering and changing out the soil medium over the years to grow roots under the trunk. It began as a 7 foot tree. The tree is a female and has a very tight folliage with berry like seeds. I did not reduce any of the folliage when I collected it and it was potted in totally inorganic soil.

This is a great approach. It shows true understanding and real bonsai patience. Such work will definitely improve the chances of a trees survivability. My kudos and I wish you the best of luck with this wonderful tree's development.

Yes, Only the female trees have the tight folliage though. In the wild you can see the end result but it take constant attention to return the immature needle folliage to tight mature once the initial styling is done...like 2-3 years.

Fantastic! And a new one to me too Wink Seems like a lot of new options are becoming available to us: Pinyon Pine, Limber Pine, and now this, One Seed Juniper. All so very cool!

Thanks for sharing! It's inspiring!

Frank's approach to collecting this tree is really exciting. If one travels through New Mexico and Arizona up through the Rockies there are literally millions (maybe 100s of millions) of interesting junipers, pines, spruces and even oaks. Patient collecting may be able to allow the harvesting of these for bonsai.
Very exciting.

BTW, I'd love to see a collected Gamble Oak one of these days.

Here's a colledted Silver Oak from south of Tucson before styling.

Here's another view of the base. The tree began as an 8 foot tree
and has been styled in the ground over the past 5 years to this
point. It will not be touched again until it begins to "spike" - about
one year which tells me the roots are activly working. the folliage
will be primarily centered over the trunk and the top right will be
largely reduced and ginned grey dead wood...so goes the 5 year
plan.
