The use of Tenpai Empty The use of Tenpai

The use of figurines to add to the story of display. I find little reference and guidance in older bonsai magazines and nothing really in books printed in english. Would love to have someone start sharing.......

I found a pretty tancho craine and wanted to use it in a display and was told wait for late winter, during their breeding season to use. So I know there's a lot to learn and would like to begin, with you sharing what you know or sharing what material you have found on the subject.

Thanks in advance Very Happy

I have been working in the Gaddou system with Kuzuhara Ikkou Sensei. In his books I have only studied a little bit about the 添配accent pieces (He calls them Soe and not Tenpai, but I can see how these two characters could also be read Tenpai). But the first point that he hammered into me is to understand how to rank the various pieces from most formal (真 Shin) to Semi-formal (行 Gyou) to informal (草 Sou). The ranking is based upon primarily by what the image depicts and the second is with what the material the piece is made.
Image Rankings
Human Buildings Other Images
Formal (真 Shin) Divine Images Buddha/Shinto Gods etc. Temples, Pagodas, Jinja (Shrines) etc. N/A
Semi-formal (行 Gyou) Buddhist Priests, Masterless Samurai, Wise men, Nobility Towers, Bridges, Rookeries N/A
Informal (草 Sou) Travelers, Woodcutters, Fishermen, Farmer, Herdsmen Grass thatched roof House, cabin Boats, Rafts, Paper/Calligraphy Items, Animals, Bugs, Fruit
Material Rankings:
The following are ranked as formal pieces:
銅製 どうせい Copper/Bronze
銀製 ぎんせい Silver
真鍮 しんちゅう Brass
石 いし Rock
The Semi-formal Pieces are:
陶製 とうせい Ceramics/ Earthenware
The Informal Pieces are:
木彫 もくちょう Wood Craft
牙彫 げちょう Ivory/Teeth Items
竹根彫 ちくねちょう Bamboo Made Items

As for your question about birds, certain birds are associated with certain Seasons. I am not sure if you are referring to cranes, but the small Heron小鷺 is usually associated with a summer season. However, the Tsuru (Crane) is associated with longevity/long life, so it may make sense to be associated with a New Year display as well.
