Is this Tanuki? Empty Is this Tanuki?

Not sure if this is a good idea but I have been pondering about it and might have some applications later.

Is it considered tanuki if you attach or "graft" a branch into a dead wood...if both branches are on one/same tree?
Anyone tried this method?

Thank you.

I think that is a great idea, not sure if it is considered tanuki or not. I have seen Kimura saw a live vein off dead wood to move to another location on the same tree. Grafting a branch onto dead wood on the same tree is not much different to that.

I had not thought of this, but i have a tree I think this will be useful on to place some foliage where it is needed Smile

Glad you see an application.

I am thinking this can be done on buttonwood as well since most new growth are like whips and can be easily positioned along a dead branch above it. I just might give it a try and see.

hi,

it doesn't really matter if it is classed as tanuki or just 'making' a bonsai. Tanuki isnt a lesser method, it is just an alternative method. most bonsai work is artificial afterall - whether it is grafting foliage, branches or entire trees to dead wood. The source of the material doesnt make much difference either - i am growing cuttings and layers from a juniper to add them as branches and extra live viens to the original tree so the foliage is exactly the same but it makes no difference to me if the tree is a tanuki or not. Satsuki can have all branches grafted to get desirable flowers sometimes but They are just 'made' to be a better bonsai.

I dont think growing thin suckers up a dead section of a tree and along a dead branch is tanuki at all as the living material is all attached to the same roots. I would use every technique you can to make the tree as good as possible.

cheers Marcus
