Big ol Layer

Found this Elm in a customers garden. It was part of a very old hedge. When I collected it ,I soon realised it had bad inverse taper. Once the tree had gained strength, I airlayered it. This pic is 2 years after separation, taken today.

I wanted to get some shape in the branches before they got too bulky, so it was leaf pruned

Is there a reason for such a small pot? Seems very crowded.

Excellent Will. You are making me want to get out and go prospecting. I know a few spots where the Elms hang on. Some are the type that develops ridged corky bark on fast growing twigs. Have you encountered these?

Think I might start looking in your customer's gardens - nice gnarly piece, looks like it might bite.

Thankyou all for your kind comments. Rob. This is just a large training pot to develope the branches.
There are a few things niggleing me with this tree. At the moment it looks like 2 trees, one on top of the other. The bottom part moves to the right and the top to the left. I think this confuses the flow somewhat. I had thought of airlayering the top off? It could also be looked at as a kind of rock planting, with individual trees all the way up. I'll leave it as it is, for the time being but any critisism would be greatly apreciated.

I agree with you that the top does not coordinate well with the bottom segment. It is too long and too straight as compared to the tapered base. You could shorten off the top segment a lot or remove it entirely.

This is a great find! I'm very jelous!

I don't have to much problem regarding the movement to the right then left. I think that if you bring the eventual apex back to the right over, the centre of the tree, it will look fine and balance the tree back out. I'd certainly give it the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

Tilted the tree forwards and rotated slightly to the left. I think the movement is slightly better at this angle.

Definitely much better but is the apex heading away?

The apex was level with the base before I tilted the pot forward.

nice tree!, some time it remind me of some tree grow on the big cliff.

Will, off topic, but whenever I see your name, I'm reminded of the English actress Angela Baddeley who was a star in the English tv series UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS. I watched it years ago on our PBS. It's made a comeback on cable and I'm enjoying it again. Great show!
