Odd little pot Empty Odd little pot

Post  Russell Coker Mon Jul 25, 2011 3:54 am

While I was In Japan, a friend of my boss gave me an odd little pot. I've never seen anything like it until Morten posted pictures of his trip to Japan. The same pot is in his Mansei-en pictures, and he let me repost it here...

And here's my pot...

The pot is small, sit in the palm of your hand shohin size. It has a small chop, but I think it's too faint to read. The unusual thing is the 2 different clays that make up the top lip part, and the bottom.

Does anyone know anything about this pot?

Thanks, R

I haven't seen anything like it either, Mitch, until Morten's thread. Needless to say I was pretty shocked. I wish I knew something - anything - about it. I'll get out the magnifying glass and see if I can make out the chop. It's about 1/4 inches square.

Take a picture of the chop. I can not reasearch history, but may be able to give some readings for the name if it is not in Reisho style.

Yeah, post the chop. If it's real light and an indented chop, rub a little cream of tartar into the impression for better photo visibility(a Smoke tip)

Well, my camera sucks, so I'll have to see if I can find someone to take the picture. The cream of tartar did help make it more visible, the problem is that the chop is about 1/4 x 1/4 inch square!

Hello all. I already emailed Russell the info, but it could be useful to post it here.
The pot is Chinese and its around 40-50 years old. Its mad by a kiln the Japanese call KoShoBai(If my Kanji translation is correct). Retail around $300, so it was a very nice gift! A couple more pics follow of the chop and pot.

It looks like a chalice that was filled with hot chocolate and then someone dropped a stone into it and the resulting "plop" was caught by a high speed camera and then freeze framed..

I love it!

Ryan, thanks for the detective work! I'm glad to know it's such a great little pot. I've always loved it and I'm really glad to know something about it. It was given to me by my benefactor's friend who was in the Yakusa. Mob ties or not, he and his gang produced some of the finest satsuki bonsai I've ever seen. They had very expensive taste in antique pots and stands and I always looked forward to seeing what they'd bring to shows. They were always kind and generous with me, and I remember them fondly. He had a son my age, Tsukasa, and one year I brought him a bottle of Bacardi 151 and Southern Comfort back to Japan after returning home for Christmas. Maybe that's how I got this pot...

Anyway, Jay, it does look like chocolate. Hopefully, one day I'll have some great little trees to go in all of these great little pots I have!

Thanks Neil, Russell,
It won't be long at all before everyone will be able to ID pots. I'm working on uploading my entire Hanko and Rakkan database to my blog pages, should have it up before January 7. While the bonsaipotplaza page is incredibly helpful, it's also woefully incomplete and inaccurate!

Yes, well, it's sort of like feeding a stray cat. The next thing you know, you own a cat! (or the cat owns you).

Dont even talk to me about cats Russ! I have way too many because the F-ing feral kittens kept pooping in my turface/litter mix! So I had to bring em in to keep em away from the trees! Anybody want a cat!

Hi russel

Remember who gave you the pot Smile ....I would not dare even think about selling a gift from them...10 years ago, I was 2 meters away from 2 of theese guys in expensive suits, they were handling/talking to the floormanager in Mitsukoshi, Fukuoka. They scared the s... out of me.

Kind regards Yvonne
