Controlling leaf budding
Hi Guys,
I got a section of a trunk that I would like to keep leaves from budding. The species I am using, Wrightia Religiosa, back buds easy. Can I just tape it with black tape to direct budding to a certain section of the trunk above the tape?
Thanks.
regards,
Kevin

If buds show up where up don't want them, just rub them off. I think you will always be doing this with Wrightia.
I have never tried putting tape on the tree to direct budding. Sometimes making a deep cut in the trunk above where you want the bud will work. the cut should be no more than 1/4 around the tree and parallel to the soil line.

There are also grafting techniques that might work. Check out "thread graft" or "approach graft." Wrightia grow from cuttings quickly and growing stock for an approach graft should be easy.

Hello Billy,
Thanks for the response. I have heard but never tried scoring the bark but am tempted now.
