Re: Help with ID?
Hi Dorothy.
This pot is by Akira Watanabe, (Akira Shouzan). He uses the name "Shouzan" and I'm pretty sure that's the chop you usually see. This chop reads "Jyuutouzan noin". I'm not sure why there is a distinction - quality, age???
The other chop associated with this studio is used by Fumikazu Watanabe and reads as "Shukouzan".
Ryan????
Nekotoban???

Yes! You are right, Russel! Found the chop online. Thank you very much. The pot is supposed to be from the early 1900s? It is incredibly smooth and rather heavy.

Re: Help with ID?
I don't think it's that old, Dorothy. But I may be wrong!
That chop is my Tokoname catalog from the 80's. I just don't think they'd still be using a chop from the previous generation, and for the time line to work that's what it would have to be. I'm thinking it's still an older pot, but more likely from the 60's or 70's. One of the founding members of the Pensacola club and BSF, and really the 'godfather' of bonsai in north Florida, was a man named Ed Potter. He imported pots, and REALLY good ones. There are old Yamaaki pots, as well as other high quality pots, still floating around up here from those early days. Every now and then they turn up at sales and auctions. An elderly couple I know has that same pot for sale along with other lesser pots... and I really should buy it.
I bet if you were to talk with an old timer like Jim Smith he'd remember Ed. Seems like there was someone in the south part of the state also importing, maybe even together with Ed - possibly Helen Souder. By the time I started meeting BSF people though Jean Smith and Elise Van Dyke in 78 and 79ish, Ed was long gone (along with a lot of other old names you'd know that have gone since). Besides Jim you may ask Cliff Pottberg, Mary Madison or the Borchers.
Hmmm... I'm thinking it was Helen. At the 93 convention in Orlando she had tons of old pots for sale that had never been out of their packaging. Seems like I remember hearing a connection to Ed Potter. Needless to say, I "helped" Hellen unpack and set them up. I bought 2 old Yamaakis that I've never seen for sale before of since, plus some others. She was sweet and let me pay her over time!

Indeed Russell,
This pot is "Akira Shouzan", although his pots are generally refered to as "Akira Shouzan", while "Shouzan" is Watanabe Masami, "Shouzan Kaneshou", father of "Ikkou." Akira Shouzan pots are significantly more valuable than Shouzan, by maybe 50-100%.

Thank you for sharing some good old times, Russel! Many of these fine folks I never met or have never spent time with them. And thank you for the info about the chop!
Ryan, thank you much for the clarification. I truly enjoyed your website! I will definetly get back to you about some pots.
Best,
Dorothy

Thanks Ryan!
And thanks D too. I have to admit that I've always been kinda sad we don't live closer. I love your work, and I've always thought we'd have a lot of fun at this. I think you're pretty damn wonderful!

Sure thing dorothy, feel free to email me any pot IDs or questions you may have! I love this stuff! In fact, I was recently mocked for my inability to tear myself away from Bill V's pot collection to help setup a shohin bonsai display! I love me some pots!
