Pruning Questions Empty Pruning Questions

Post  Phillip W. Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:27 am

Ive been at Bonsai for about 4 months now. Ive just been picking up trees here and there, mostly different species of juniper as they seem to be highly recommended for beginners. Ive not been able to do much with the cold season quickly approaching. The one thing I have done is research. 3 months from now spring will be here and I dont wanna be caught with my pants down in the busiest time of the year for Bonsai. Ive read everything I can find, watched videos, and hunted down some local growers that seem to have some good insight. I feel pretty prepared for spring, I have a solid plan for getting my trees into training pots, and getting some shaping and wiiring done. Many of my trees need some initial pruning... I understand I can prompt growth by pruning, I think anyway. But I have questions. If cut a branch will 2 branches grow? If I then cut those 2 will they become four? is this how this works? If so, does this work on all trees? This is probably an easy question, but its still a bit of a grey area for me. I want to be able to create a dense accumulation of foliage out at the end of the branches. I feel like pruning is the way to achieve this, so Im looking for a bit of guidance if anyone has time.

If cut a branch will 2 branches grow?

Sometimes, but probably not with junipers. The branch will probably just change direction slightly, depending on where the next bud is pointing.

It depends on the branch and leaf structure. In trees with opposite leaves and branches (like maples), if you cut just after a pair of buds you will get two new leaves/branches. In trees with alternate leaves/branches (hornbeam/beech, etc.) you will get a zig-zag result, one branch going off toward where that next bud was pointing.

To get mature growth, you have to let it grow and be a tree. After you've pruned back, let it rest. What juniper species do you have on hand?
