Recently I was given some bareroot black pine and redwood wisps. What would be the best way to help ensure their making it through a new england winter (6a). Ground or potting? Any ideas are really welcomed.

My guess would be to pot them up in a few training pots in coarse soil. Keep them in a sheltered area, preferably just above freezing. Don't let them dry out too much.

Were the pines comepletely bare root? I don't think they should ever have all the soil removed from their roots....

Young JBP seedlings are routinely shipped bare root and this should not be a problem. I agree with Iris. I received some bare root JBP seedlings last year about this time last year. The were potted up and kept in my garage until freeze risks had passed. You'll probably have to protect them until mid April in Boston. Another option would be to plant them out directly in the ground...I doubt your soil is frozen yet because of the warm weather you've had. If you are planning on growing them out in the ground, this is probably your best option. These trees are perfectly hardy in Boston out in the landscape. Good luck.
