Hello Folks,

I sent a Tamarind seed/s in a local sweet [ Tamarind Ball - tamarind meat/seeds and sugar ] to an elder friend in New Jersey. He planted it in February, and about 3 weeks or so later, it germinated. Today it is 4 feet tall.

Unless a tree is genetically a slow grower, the correct soil, and proper growing conditions will result in good results.

Generally, if you use the rule of thumb [ as a guide ] 1 inch of trunk = 5 inches of height for a stout tree and 1 inch of trunk = 6 inches of tree for a more graceful effort, a tree around 15 to 18 inches - 3 inch trunk, is possible in a year or two. Of course one should use open ground at first and then later large pots, but remember to place the seedling in a colander [ plastic works well once under earth so the sun cannot quickly decay it.]

As one ages, 15 to 18 inch tall trees in the appropriate pot, is just manageable when lifted. So even though 5 and 6 inch trunks may look more impressive, you will need more hands.

Second note - taking a class in pottery, and learning the basics will allow you to make your own pots, and a second hand kiln can easily be found, preferably gas, if you want to add a second quality of colour. Of course one can also build a simple kiln, with the bricks so easily available today.
In fact, clay can be hand dug, processed, as can basic components for glaze. At the lower temperatures you can also use cullet [ soda bottles.]

This way the hobby stays almost free.
Yes, you can find soil components for free as well, just ask a friend who does Geology.

So instead of punching holes in your pocket, just be self sufficient. I have been so for over 30 something years and have never regretted it.

Well I just wanted to share that with you folks and with the New Year, I shall fiendishly send him a few seeds of the Leucaena, which grows wild down and maybe a cutting of a Gmelina.
See how he handles even faster growing tree/shrub. - evil laughter Mu ha ha ha Twisted Evil
Enjoy your Sunday.

Hello, dear friend!
Thanks for posting your thoughts. They meet mine in some extend...
For the time being I am growing some water jasmins/wrightia religiosa from seed. I have sown them last September and they grow under fluorescent light. They look healthy up to now and I hope they will keep on going like this....
