the books that help and inspire

Post  marcus watts on Tue Nov 22, 2011 5:30 pm

hi,

sat in the throne room the other evening I was looking at the most inspirational non bonsai book i own - 'meetings with remarkable trees, by thomas pakenham' and it got me thinking what are peoples best bonsai books, and non bonsai books. For me the bonsai book i get most pleasure from is 'classic bonsai of japan', (but mission of transformation is teaching me the most). the 'meetings' book is a fantastic collection of britains unique trees and a beautiful slice of uk tree history.

thanks Marcus

For how-to, Deborah Koreshoff's Bonsai, its Art, Science, History, &, Philosophy. Mine is SO dog-eared now . . .

For bonsai inspiration: A couple of Kokufen albums I own, and especially a lovely, best-of book of shohin trees and pots from Gafu-ten exhibits #20-29. The trees are gorgeous and the pots are simply exquisite! I gaze through it a few times a year. I also have numbers 1-10 and 60-70 other Bonsai Today magazines, but almost always turn first to Bill V's International Bonsai magazine.

Non-bonsai reference: Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, by Michael Dirr. There are a couple of editions out since mine and some day I may update. But I think everything I'd ever want to make a bonsai from is in my edition.

that is a good read - i keep that one in the pile by the bed in case steven king isnt doing it that evening !

i know what you mean jim about the show albums - the quality is completley mind blowing, the attention to detail is something missing from out culture....

Jay.....how cool you have the 'meetings' book - it is a one in a million in my opinion ! looking a it i applaud nature and know we are just scratching the surface but at least we are doing something. so far i have seen three of the trees and have grown acer seedlings from one of them,

thanks Marcus

Apologies if this has been recommended already but I feel strongly the very thin book Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers by Leonard Koren is an essential read (and re-read and re-re-read) for anyone interested in the esthetic.

One of my favorites is "Four Seasons of Bonsai" by Kyuzo Murata.

Some years ago my dear Wife bought me The World of Bonsai by Paul Lesniewicz from a remainder bookshop in Hay on Wye ( A town on the English Welsh border area full of bookshops). Rather a coffee table book but amazing photos, the only trouble is I don't know if such books are an inspiration or make me despair of my modest little trees and give it all up.

Marcus good thread started....however I have about 10 bonsai books, lately I've been just getting all info I need from internet. Combine reading with video look to me more convenien than books. The modern trend is going this way [phone or tablet] Thats my 2 cents Smile
