I don't think it is a Ficus. A quick check for Ficus is remove a leave and observe the milky white sap (latex).

I think you're right on target with the Home Depot topiary idea. Those are Eugenia, but I don't remember the species. Also goes by Australian brush cherry. Where the hell did she get linden?????

Your right on target with Eugenia (Syzygium paniculatum) would be my guess.

And ficus don't have opposite leaves, do they? The pictured plant seems to have opposite leaves.
