making Scrolls

HI, could someone advise me, if there is any website on scroll constuction as i like painting and would love to make some of my own scrolls to display around the house. I need to know where to get supplys in the uk and how to construct the scroll.

you can get the paper from here, the ends are sold by many of the online scroll sellers and craigs site has loads of info about construction etc

if you already have a website and book about scroll design etc you should know what paper to buy and where to get a brush from surely ?

if not, it would be better to contact the site selling the paper and ask which they think is correct paper for each stage

Think we're mixing up who asked the original question here. Kakejiku was really only pointing out that the japanesepaperplace website didn't give enough information that Simon (the original poster) would be able to use.

Simon - in addition to Jonathan's (Kakejiku's) site, you could also look at Craig Coussins' one which you can find HERE and also Paul Goff's which you can find HERE

Between them they will certainly give you inspiration.

hi fiona, i fully realise who wrote the original post, but I was pointing out in response to jons comment you only need to physically ask the paper place people what they recomend if they havent gone into enough depth of info on the web site. - it is good to talk. ! i can see how it appears i was talking to the original poster rather thn the commenter- sorry!


in all fairness jonathon could have been more helpfull to the original poster if he actually knows the answers - just saying that the paper site doesnt tell you what to use for what purpose and that they dont list brushes was no real help at all, and someone with a book and website could have helped to answer the original guys question about where to buy the items that are required, and as we have both indicated craigs site has info too, but he sells and repairs scrolls so probably wont give away where he buys the parts from, but he may do if asked, again - its good to talk

Not gonna put words into Jonathan's mouth but I suspect he maybe didn't want to seem over-eager to "advertise" his own stuff too quickly in case that dragon moderator wumman got at him. Poor guy was probably terrified he got a blast of dragon breath.

Craig will be only too happy to talk scrolls to anyone. Simon, I don't know where you live in the UK but if you can get to the outskirts of Glasgow, you could give yourself a treat by spending some time with him. Might be worth contacting Paul (Northamptonshire) as well for the same reason.

Thanks for your replies so far, theres some good info on those sites, The paper site is a little hard to work out what you would need without spending on stuff that wouldnt be very good to use.

I bought all of these and some scroll making equipment when in Japan, but have not yet found the time to get started. Perhaps when I retire!
