transplanting giant crepe myrtle in zone 7 now?

Post  bucknbonsai on Tue Oct 18, 2011 9:35 pm

I live in zone 7 and own a tree in another part of zone 7. Its an 8" diameter 11 foot tall crepe myrtle that was dug 2 years ago and has a shallow root system that has now recovered. Would now be a good time to dig it and move it to where I live now? I would need to cut it down to about 40 inches (3" diameter stub) I know they say things root in the fall but im not sure if they mean august through october or now till december? My only problem is that the place it currently lives in, I only visit a few times a year and it always seems to be completely dormant or completely in leaf.

If you can wait until spring, I'd recommend it. These are tough plants, but a second transplant so soon after the first -- and in the fall -- isn't a good idea, IMO
