Plywood Pots?
my company has a lot of scrap plywood. It is 3/8" to 3/4" CD plywood. Can I make pots out of it? Is it ok to use?

Re: Plywood Pots?
yes, it works better than plastic tubs because the wood doesnt flex like plastic and hence fine roots are not broken up when you lift the pot. Also the wood is a better insulator than black plastic which can bake roots in full sun in the summer.

You could use untreated plywood for training pots, but it would not be a suitable substitute for the ceramic pot for a finished bonsai.

Depends upon the plywood, outdoor plywood will last a while, but kept wet the indoor stuff will delaminate pretty quickly.

Bill stole the words right out from under my fingers. I would stay away from pressure treated as well, the chemicals can leach into your substrate.

Because CD is pretty rough stuff you may find it rots out on you pretty quickly (3-4yrs). It would be good for grow boxes I suppose, nearly half of my collection is in 1by pine sided, plywood bottomed, grow boxes, they warp, they turn grayish-black with age and water, but they serve well for their purpose. One thing I like to be able to do is whip together custom grow boxes in the shop while I'm collecting trees from the woods, I can basically dig, bare root, measure the root size, and throw together the appropriate sized box in my shop all as part of the transplanting process.

Re: Plywood Pots?
I was hoping for this answer. If the wood is free to me I am out zero dollars. If it last 6 months or 5 years I am ahead of the game. The wood is not treated jsut standard plywood c/d grade.
Thanks all

You can screw small hooks in around the edges of the box, and if you need to train a branch in a particular direction they provide a good anchor point.
