ligustrum? Empty ligustrum?

Post  giga Wed Sep 14, 2011 9:04 pm

My local green house has a great looking ligustrum, not sure which species but has been grown in a green house all its life and thinking about getting it since it's really cheap and using it as a fun project bonsai. Can it be worked on or does it need to be a certain time of year, never owned one before.and seems to be conflicting info on sites. I don't plan on taking leaves off just a little carving of some deadwood, can this be moved to a new pot without cutting any roots?

Can you be any more specific than "ligustrum"?

Also, you may find some useful info if you type "privet" into the search bar.

If you're just "slip potting" it without disturbing any roots then it should be fine.

In this part of the world, you can do what you like when you like to a privet.

We can't really help with just "Ligustrum." There are at least 40 species, and they vary widely in how you might treat them.

Sorry its a ligustrum Sinense and I didn't get it because it has a large trunk cut on it and from what I read the deadwood rots no matter what you do unless I'm mistaken?

I didn't know anyone even sold Ligustrum sinensis any more. Most jurisdictions consider it to be an invasive exotic and spend more money on trying to eradicate it rather than grow it. But it is a losing proposition as it is here to stay.

They make very nice bonsai of many/any size. You can do most anything to them, but wiring is a problem as the branches have a very long memory.

What about the dead wood because this tree would only be good(my mind anyway) with the deadwood worked in?

The deadwood in this species rots quite easily. I've tried wood hardener, epoxy, etc., and it still rots. I'd try to minimize any deadwood features beyond the occasional jin at the top.
