Urine fertilizer

Post  Guest on Mon Aug 29, 2011 3:31 am

Hi people.

Some might find this "yucky" but is there somebody out there tried using urine,,,yup urine! for fertilizer? I got this idea from some old folks here who uses urine as blooming fertilizer to orchids.
Then I made some research on the urine chemical components. It turns out to be rich in potassium, nitrogen and phosphate- all of these are the same main "ingredients" found in your chemical fertilizer.

Have I tried it? I think it works for my tropical trees. affraid confused

It also works for most people using it on flowers, crops and the crops bears more and bigger fruits and vegetables are less prone to parasitic problems.Talking about organically yield produce, yummy fresh tomatoes and green salad anyone! (Thats what they said in "Science daily"). It was scientifically proven they said.

Its advantage over chemical fertilizer, I think for one it is free, then good for the environment and have a well balanced composition.
Don't pour pure and new urine directly on leaves as it will burn the sensitive new leaves.
Don't use it at least seven days before a show. for the obvious reason.
Don't pee on your tree please!!! Twisted Evil

If you are not sure on this don't use it.

regards,
jun Embarassed

I remember an eccentric old man from my childhood who used to pee on his orchids, and have heard of it a few times since. I guess it also depends on your particular brand of pee. I fear mine would give the trees alchohol poisoning Embarassed

Diluted 8:1 one part urine that is, although there seems to be some question as to the amount of dissolved salts there could be present in each individuals urine, sodium chloride being the main one, sorta gives a whole new meaning to the term 'hard water'....... Laughing

..."salty water" one of the key factors in keeping a Phempis acidula and other trees coming from the seashore. Pee got a balanced Ph too. For large plants 1:6 proportion is more adequate. Diabetic person got more sugar in their urine and this will create problem with trees.

Interesting topic and like the responses which have trickled in. I was wondering if people who are taking medications would pass these through their urine, I would hate to kill a tree to save a few dollars on fertilizer. If anyone has any knowlege in regard to this I would appreciate it.

One of the biggest parts of Nitrogen chemical fertilizer is Urea, maybe the only one, and that is the major solid in urine. I would hate to have my plants smelling like urine all the time... An interesting thing is, I read there are kinds of tiny mushrooms that grow where there is urine on the ground in woods... well, I thought it was interesting anyway.... scratch I know what they look like, tiny, red, and flat, but when I just tried doing an internet search for red and mushrooms and urine it gives info on a completely different kind and its illicit use pig Oh well.

My parents told me that the Japanese used human urine and feces to grow produce (they lived their during the US occupation). They didn't say anything about bonsai. I know that where I pee in the yard the grass grows faster and greener. Same is true of our doggies. Where they poop the grass grows faster and is greener.

An old idea Jun,

if you enjoy compost making, put the urine there to age in. I have a found rabbit and use a bed of cedrula sawdust as his toilet, when totally saturated I add this to the compost heap.

As was said - "We grow bonsai for beauty, not production or size "- so with good drainage [ ball bearing shaped inorganics and compost or mature horse or cow,] in the soil, the trees will be happy.
Later.

I have noticed a difference in the amount of blooms on Azaleas in the yard that I 'water' and those that nature waters.

The nitrogen in your urine is contained mostly in the form of Urea (hence Urine). It is, as such, not immediately available to plants and needs to be broken down into ammonia and nitrate by soil bacteria that contain the enzyme urease. If you are using a soiless or predominately inorganic soil as most Bonsai growers do, the chances are the urea will just build up in your soil and burn your plants.

In the ground bacteria abound and the Urea would be decomposed into plant friendly nutrients much more efficiently and safely but still soluble salts remain in Urine.
-Jay

Along these lines I just switched over to the Urea free chemical fertilizers, Dyna-grow and Grow More "orchid," and I'm getting phenomenal results, far better than I have seen with either cakes, fish emulsions or Miracle Grow.

In the A brocade Pillow there are references to using human manure as fertiliser.

firstly - dig up some soil from a sewage canal, dry it well in the sun and sift finely. this should be mixed with the soil in a 1:3 ratio for planting.

another - mix one bucket of human manure with two of water and let it stand for a month until the odor dissipates. strain the mixture and when it rains pour a little over the roots of the plants.

fallen leaves burried until decayed is also mentioned.

Hello,
It sure does.
But using tap water has some merits to, here the drinking water is tested, but only on things that are on the list,
difficult things are not listed, so in that way it is easy to say the water is save to drink and cheap for the water company.
It is a big problem in water recycling, to clean the water of all sorts of medicine, specially hormones is a big challenge.
Using tap water means using all sorts of chemicals, hormones and so on.
