Hey Everyone,

Its been a while since I've posted anything but I was thrilled to see the addition of this category! I began making my own stands about 2 years ago and most of the earlier attempts were pretty bad. I am fortunite to have a great bonsai teacher who studied in Japan and was able to give me some much needed feedback on my stands. I have also been lucky enough to build his stands for him. I have another great friend Neil D who has also given me the honor of building stands for his trees. Any feedback is very welcome!

This first stand was built for my friend Neil D. He will be showing a beautiful Boug on it at this years Midwest Bonsai show.

Here it as at last years Midwest Bonsai show with one of my teachers larger trident maples.

This next stand was also built for my friend Neil D. He called me and told me he would need a cascade stand for one of his junipers. We talked for a while about the size and this is what we agreed on. I also had just finished making a few burl slabs that I thought would make a great composition. Here are the photos he sent me once he received the shipment of the stand and the slab.

Absolutely beautifully constructed stands. One small thing bothers me on the cascade stand. I can see that it is an innovation, but the "floating" top doesn't work for me. The visual lack of corners disrupts the upward flow and distracts.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Kev, I've had mixed reviews of that floating top but the story behind it is that I had made the two stands below and we both thought it would look really cool on the cascading stand.

The floating top is ALL about the bonsai sitting on it, that's what makes it or breaks it. They're beautifully done! Very light and graceful.

very nice work and thanks for posting.

What I find challenging not only is the pairing of the tree to the stand BUT the height of the table from which
the tree/stand is being displayed on. This small % of angle from being perfect for viewing can make or break the look. I have a tokonoma in my house and find that avid bonsai types don't mind the floor seating while casual visitors are not too excited to be at the right level.

Hello, congratulations for these so nice works.

I also do my own tables to myself, but for little, because of it him one notices even the hands of a beginner.
Yours are very nice.

A greeting from espaƱa

Is it a Kekkomi or Fumikomi style Toko no Ma? I think that would also determine whether Seza is absolutely necessary.

Jay,
Don't show off the little beauty you're working on right now Cool

It is absolutely the most elegant stand I've ever seen. Jay truly outdid himself. I have a sweet little trident shohin to accompany Jay's superb workmanship. Very Happy

Thanks for everything Jay!

Rob,

First off I want to say your stand you posted is wonderful! I've seen a few of your pieces and they are not only beautiful but very well crafted! As for the stand I'm making for Neil, I would love to post a picture but the stand is still getting the finish applied and more importantly, I did promise Neil I would wait to post pictures until we could shoot it with his tree at the Midwest Show. I promise tho, once the show is over (Aug 19th weekend) I'll put up pictures! I also have a few other stands/slabs in the works and once those are done I'll put them up!

Cheers,

~ Jay

Ok Rob,

The Midwest Bonsai Show ended on Sunday so I figured I would post the pictures of the stands that were made for Neil and our teacher Matt. They are both similar in design, the only diference aside from the finish is that the stand I made for Matt is squared with slightly more movement on the feet.

This is Neils twin trunk Kaede (Trident Maple) on his newest stand.

SWEEEEEET!!! Worth the wait. Lovely proportions and finish. (Ah, the trees are pretty nice too! Wink ) Although the second tree seems a bit massive for the delicate stand.
