Hello All
Last spring I was given a very nice Gardinia. My question is what time of the year is best to do a heavy styling and root work. The tree is very healthy with lots of new growth. So far I have done nothing but observe the growth pattern. I live in zone 8 / 9.

Thanks in advance
Mitch

Mitch, treat it like an azalea.

I have been basically Keeping it alive, it is doing surprisingly well so far. I am not the best azaleas so can you give a basic time line on a yearly schedule?

Thanks Mitch

Repot next year in early spring -- late January/early February where you are. Add some organic material to your normal bonsai soil. Keep moist NOT wet. Keep in a.m. sun where you live - shade in afternoon.

I don't recall if flower buds form on new or old wood, so observe. That will dictate when regular pruning occurs. Branches will be brittle. Wire with care.

Blooming on new vs old wood seems to depend on the variety, and most seem to do both. Is yours G. radicans, dwarf gardenia? Seems like my radicans bloomed on new wood before I lost it to nematodes even in a pot.

I've never found them to be brittle, or difficult to wire. But I have found that they don't appreciate being potbound and hungry, so fertilize often and plan on repotting every year - down here in the coastal South anyway.

Russell

I don't know what the variety is. I will post some pictures this weekend. If this helps, just before it blooms the adjacent leaves below the flower start off almost varrigated the after it blooms the leaves turn a darker solid green. And the Blooms are about 1-1/4" in Diameter. For all I know they may all do this. just some thing I observed.
