I was given this mini cultivar of Chamaecyparis. Is it C. lawsoniana compacta?

Or is it a C. obtusa cultivar?

Or is it something else?

I think it's C. obtusa 'fernspray'.

Thanks, Russ. Checking my books, that looks like it.

Now to figure what to do with it.

First thoughts were to grow several of hose long branches into cuttings next spring and see what I can do with a mini forest.

I'm not sure this is the same variety or not... https://ibonsaiclub.forumotion.com/t5401-hinoki-shohin

They say the Japanese name is 'seha' or 'sekka'. Could be the same as what's being sold in the nursery trade as 'fernspray'. Wouldn't be the first time American nurserymen renamed a Japanese plant. I just picked up a big one yesterday.

Sure looks like it. TNX

Google only gives me 'fernspray GOLD' with part yellow foliage. No yaller on my plant.

Try the Esveld nursery catalog, they have about 30-40 Chamaecyparis, most of them with photos. since they are not bonsai, the photos show the natural way of the tree, which is thus easier to identify than from photos of trained trees, sometimes very far from the natural look of the species used as a garden plant:

From that list the only obtusa that comes close to what I have, what I think Jim has, and what I think is the same as Sunip's is 'rigid dwarf'. For now I'm sticking with 'fernspray', at least on this side of the world.

Another name for 'fernspray' is 'filicoides'. Also check out one called 'chairman'.

hi,
i'd plant it in the garden and enjoy its natural form - if it looks like a potential candidate as a bonsai dig it up or layer / take cuttings - if not just enjoy the plant, as it looks a bit un-tree-like atm
