2,000 peso (47.60 US$)

Hi IBC.

Somebody told me that I am lucky having many good materials to work with. I took the statement as a compliment...but more of a challenge. So I decided to challenge my self, I set a budget of 2,000 Peso (US$47.60) and see what can I do with it using cheap materials available to everyone (mostly).

Here is the breakdown of cost:

Rock and Slab- Peso 700 (US$16.70)
Mallsai elm- Peso 500 (US$ 11.90)
Cement 1/2 kl- Peso 10 (US$ 0.24)
Hut - Peso 300 (US$ 7.15)
Beer 2 bottles- Peso 50 (US$ 1.20)
Personal satisfaction- Priceless


TOTAL COST- Peso1,560 (US$ 37.19)--including beer

Yes Todd. It can be found in the mountain quarry here. very nice to plan on as the interior is soft and contain soil materials which the roots can feed on. The outer layer is very hard where moss can grow.

wow, with beer at about 30p a bottle i could create nice bonsai 365 days a year (if it is good beer!!) - can i come and visit !

very nice scene - but to keep it in perspective the actual cost of similar items in the UK or USA is a bit more as our money buys 'less'.
I visited Gambia, Africa recently and in their economy Icould have made 100's of wonderful large (and small) bonsai for £2.00 each or less. This shows the difference between nations and their economies

i do enjoy making a budget bonsai now and again though - it is a good thing to do at club meetings with new members so they can see a nice bonsai can be created for little money. We made forest plantings this march with beech, hornbeam, hawthorn or blackthorn - I bought 250+ trees and made a good soil mix & trays for £250.00 so each person had 10 trees, soil and a tray for £10.00 each.

I have added more beech trees to my forest and now have 23 nursery beech trees (plus wild seedlings waiting to be planted) in a 30" wide forest planting - without the pot this has cost £25, $37 ish. The pot is a nice one though - 30" china mist custom made pot so that adds a few £$ but this is still a large forest planting for under £110 that would cost a lot more to buy ready done. A picture will follow soon!

Great composition. I like to see what can be done with very little. It's a lesson a lot of beginners can use. You don't need to spend a lot for a quality display.

This tree/landscape is for you and for others who wanted to have a penjing in their collection with very little cost involved. Just get the mallsai, the rock, and cheap pot or slab. Post the materials here with the rock on different angle and I will be happy to assist anyone. I am sure you'll enjoy the process and the result.
If the rock is hard type and cannot be chiseled/hollowed out, two rocks with different height will do.

Good composition doesn't have to be expensive and the same thing with bonsai. The cost is one of the primary reason why people shy away from bonsai. but happiness doesn't have to be extremely expensive. All one needs is a helping hand...and mind for that matter.

We drink San Miguel beer, here its cheap but its one of the best beer in the world!{ hope the San Migle people will read this and give me free beer which I can share with Jun}

The last time I was in the Philippines the deposit on the bottle of San Miguel was 5 pesos while the beer itself was 3. Quite a deal.

Very nice Jun. I'm curious as to how you tend to the tree after something like this, seeing the tree was in full leaf. Do Chinese Elms in the Philippines even lose their leaves??

Ka Pabling - you started to drink just before I was born. It was about 15 years ago I was in the Philippines. Perhaps it was a special at the hotel bar (they were trying to attract customers during the off season). Maybe it was more than 3 pesos, but I do remember the bottle deposit being more than the beer. The current price of 25 pesos is a great buy.

Sorry Jun, from bonsai to beer anyway there is a connection, nice to do bonsai if you have beer.

I love it... although I wouldn't want to live in a hut with a huge rock leaning towards it. But it is very realistic and I like it... I am sure there are others more daring than me.

Don't worry, the hut is in the background and the dominant winds are not in its direction, so the risks are reduced.

It's a really inspirational composition, I love it. There's a lot of poetry in it, it's a true penjing for me...
