Working the deadwood on a BIG yew

I started to the work on the top of the BIG Yew that I collected a couple of years ago with the Welsh boys and Lee. A lot of the deadwood was rotten and needed clearing out... also a few branches did not make it through the establishment period and so they needed to have the bark removed and the wood worked to ensure that the 'new' Old wood matched the 'old' old wood... does that make sense?

Hi Rob...I will be blasting some parts of the tree, If I can find another Soda blasting company (the other does not trade any more) I will use that.

The Tree is LARGE and will not fit in a cabinet so it must be blasted outside.

you wil need a compressor with big inhale and exaust!!!

But...once you have this big blower....there are a lot more tools for exposure,....good thing

On trees and wood to blast sand....use glass pearl...

nice pice of dead wood...i'd presume its alive somewhere...hahaha

it is a great piece of material, but by the pictures it confuses me a bit, with out trying to be a pain, could you post other pictures?
and i just heard great news, you will be visiting our country at the end of October for a demo at the Portuguese Bonsai Federation, can't wait for it, thanks for accepting, and i hope you enjoy seafood, because the town were it all will happen is seafood paradise, regards...

A sneak preview of part of a video I have about when the tree was collected... this should help you understand the scale of the tree. The top of the tree is hidden in the foliage... and most of it was rotten, clearing out the tree exposed the trunk and the recent process was to develop the deadwood.

Can you please show us how you potted this one?
Did you put it in one huge pot, two separate pots or even sacrifice one of the root balls?

We only have yews in gardens here and they do not look anything like that.

Shohindude... the tree is in two pots.. when the tree is VERY full with new growth the tree will be split to make TWO Bonsai each with their own character. I have discussed this with a few bonsai artists who have seen the tree and all are in agreement. This will NOT be for at least two more years, getting the very best out of great material such as this yew takes time... so... watch this space

Oh...I actually though of that option too, but I had an impression that you are planning on keeping it as one tree.

Absolutely stunning Mr T. Now thats what I call a convincing and clever marriage of old and new deadwood. The Welsh guys looked a bit spooked. Was this the first time they'd seen a camera?

Not exactly 'twins' as there will be a fat one (after me) and a thin one (after Carolyn) #proudparents

no 18 months on the picture i have got the plaster on from my broken wrist April 2010 collected may 2010 good to see the tree doing well good luck with the spliting and styling
