red leaf bumps Empty red leaf bumps

Post  austinheitzman Fri Apr 24, 2009 10:20 pm

I live in Philadelphia PA- my black cherry's leaves have little red bumps on them, some of which terminate in a white cap. What is happening here? I just collected the tree this year so it is already stressed. What should be my course of action here. I have removed the infected leaves, sprayed with fungacide and placed in a sunny area that gets good wind circulation- and of course isolated it. The new batch of leaves that are growing have the same red bumps and even more white caps. Help. I would attach a picture but for the life of me I can't figure out how. hopefully the verbal image is enough.

Black cherry (Prunus serotina) gets all kinds of leaf spots -- more than any other eastern tree that I can think of. That's some sort of rust. It doesn't seem to hurt the tree, and you can remove and destroy the leaf, but I know of no preventative -- or cure.

Thanks for replying Jim, I looked up leaf rusts and what I've got seems much more gory (it is the only word I can think to describe it- looks like a B Zombie movie special effect) than the images of leaf rust. The bumps are well pronounced and very red, almost fire engine- And if the rust is on every leaf, what do you do? Will it eventually go away, or is the tree just rust ridden and waste?

Can we see some close-up pictures?

Do you have some black cherry growing in your neighborhood? Do THEY have it?

could it be some sort of leaf gall? As time elapses the bumps start out larger with more white heads. I have still been removing affected leaves, is this the right action for a leaf gall- I doubt a fugacide does much against this.

Have you tried Proactive for your tree acne? Smile Smile C'MON it was good admit it!!!! Test your soil. Or atleast plant something in some of the soil found in the pot your using. see if it happens to that plant. Just throwing it out there.

Got a whole new set of leaves- free and clean, feel like I have just be found innocent of murder charges- This plant has a whole new life ahead of it. I consider this tree to have the greatest potential of anything I have to become something special.
Here are some pictures of, it's an apple growing over a cherry. You can see why I was so determined to save it.red leaf bumps Forest12red leaf bumps Forest13

I remember when you told me you found it. This is awesome. I hope it is well and becomes something a fine piece. Have you found out anything else about it? I was thinking if this forum and the other researchingyour doing doesn't define it, you could always go to a nature center. I know of several where we last collected from.

The cherry is 100% now, nothing of the bumps are left- I think they might have been some sort of gall, they got much more vertically pronounced toward the end, and then just as suddenly as they appeared they were all gone- now the apple is the weaker- the tree is neat but it is two headaches in one- this must be what polygamy is like.

Did the spots look like this:

http://plant-disease.ippc.orst.edu/disease.cfm?RecordID=282

If so, you only have a temporary reprieve. You need to figure out how the tree got infected to begin with (its own fallen leaves? The fallen leaves of nearby trees?) and get rid of that source of infection. If you can't, you'll need to look at extension information for your state to figure out when to spray with a protectant fungicide. Good Luck!

Oh, you posted a picture: sorry! My dial-up connection is really slow and I hadn't seen any pictures when I posted. I also see you are in PA, so here's an extension bulletin from your own state:
