Hello,

I've found these videos when looking for info on Ginkgo biloba.

The first one is about surprinsing techniques with Ginkgos: repotting and trimming the roots when in full leaves, curtting branches and wiring at the same time, leaving most of the ancient soil when repotting, in a word what most of us woukld consider a sure way of killing a tree.
More surprising even, the grafts: see for yourself, I'm quite sure the word "flabbergasting" can be used Shocked

But what I find really intriguing on the next one is the thing they put at the bottom of a pot (a conifer) that looks like aluminium cooked in a special sauce(1'50"), and aslo the "magic potion" they use when watering the trees (5'20" and 8'50"):

So if anyone has some knowledge of Chinese, I would really like to know what these are.
I've asked a friend of Chinese origins, but like me, he doesn't speak his parents' language. If some of his friends in Paris can translate, I will post the solution here.

Cool ginkgo video...

His techniques seem to work for him... when you have that many ginkgos, you probably just do what you need to do, whenever you have the time Smile

Ginkgos are incredibly tough trees and prolific root growers, so it doesn't surprise me that they can take that kind of treatment. Doesn't mean it is the ideal time to do those techniques, however.

I thought the candle wax part was pretty cool Smile

For the "thing" they put at the bottom of a pot in http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzQzMTkzMDQ=.html , someone on a French forum suggested "roasted horn" (maybe there's another term in English).
It's used as a slow-release natural fertilizer, rich in nitrogen, especially recommended for conifers, so that soounds like a very good suggestion.

Hi

It took several attempts before the video window even loaded, then I watched about 3 minutes before it started buffering and all was lost - pity, I have a Gingko stick that needs to go from the nursery bag to a development pot soon....

Thanks for the link anyway....

Cheers
Gerhard

PS: Yes, I know it'll likely still be a stick when I die Laughing , beggars can't be choosers and I want a Ginkgo, I want those yellow autum leaves! Cool

If you have a garden, put it in the ground for a few years, they grow much faster then. You can even work on the strusture while waiting to put it in a pot.

Hi Alain

I'm not likely to ever own property, and if I do manage there likely won't be a garden No

For the sake of having a Ginkgo the bonsai standards go out the window....... bounce Laughing

I always make sure to tell people my Kumquat is NOT a bonsai, it's just a fruit tree in a pot - will do the same with the Ginkgo! Laughing

Anyway, "a Namibian's home is his garden" as the proverb goes.

Or maybe I'm mixing things up Very Happy

As long as your trees give you pleasure and peace of mind when you look at them, that's the most important.

Alain,

"a Namibian's home is his garden"

Never heard that one, but it's true, very true.

I could afford a small house (with tiny garden) if I had a wife/GF to contribute, but that would likely be the end of my fishing freedom.

Bonsai has freed this Namibian, he can go fishing weather/wallet/work permitting, and if need be the garden is loaded on the wagon! Laughing Laughing

Cheers
