Chinese Elm Wiring

Post  bonsaisr on Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:33 pm

I have a shohin Chinese cork bark elm that needs wiring desperately. I also have a note from somewhere that says wiring a Chinese elm in summer may cause twig dieback & inhibit growth. Is this true?

I have a standard CE and have recently wired it because the original apex was pretty ugly and I removed it. It continues to put out new growth and appears to be happy. The wiring I've done is very minimal though, things are growing like crazy down here so wire isn't good this time of year. We've had consistent temps in the mid 80s and 90s (with heat indeces reaching 100 to 110+ some days Evil or Very Mad ). Not sure about the growth habits of cork barks, but it seems to me that they may grow slower than a standard CE anyways, I'd wait for someone who actually has one to come along. Just thought I'd let you know mine's wired and doing fine.

i'd take the slightly longer but far better route with a cork elm and just use pruning to style it - they lend themselves to it perfectly with the buds at the leaf bases pointing left or right - just cut above the direction you want the branch to extend in. Also because they grow so fast and bud around all cuts it takes no time to 're-build' a tree that has lost refinement.

I don't treat Chinese Elm any differently from other types of Elm. All are late Spring or Summer wired as they heal so much quicker. I do leaf prune all deciduous trees first though. Wire is less likely to cut into the tre from now until Winter, compared with trees wired in late Winter.

Thanks. That's what my gut told me. I don't know where that note came from. alien

Tree seems to be responding just fine. I won't post a picture yet because my wiring is not appropriate to display in a family oriented web site. Maybe in the fall.
