buttonwood question Empty buttonwood question

Post  mojojava Mon Jun 27, 2011 3:46 am

Quick question: Have never really had any problems with pest on my buttonwoods. Usually only the occasional scale which is squished on site. In case of an problems that may occur can I use BIONIDE insecticidal soap? Use it on pretty much everything else but have been careful not to use it on the buttonwoods. Believe it has potassium fatty acids and no oils, neem etc. I know buttonwood can be sensitive so any experience or advice is very welcome.

Thanks
Blake

Hi Mojoava

I have several buttonwoods they are a very good tree if handled accordingly. Of course you know they are tropical. Where I live this means they are green house kept in any weather aproaching 40 Degrees F. In trays of water with aquarium heaters submerged and set to 70 deg. They love water, it is impossible to overwater them. They love a very organic soil mix. I use a compost and manuare mix from home depot sifted and use only the fines, They can handle absolute full sun all day as long as they are kept wet.

The only bugs I have had any trouble with are Carpenter ants or scale.

As far as insecticides go absolutely none that are suspended in a oil base, basicly any that the last letters that end (ION) like malithION or DiazaION, THEY WILL KILL THE TREES ! I have been using a Bayer product with good results. It comes premixed or you mix your own. It comes in a babyblue bottle if you want I can post a picture of the label.

Go to BCI specie care section for more
hope this helps
Mitch

Ortho Orthonex is what my teacher says he uses. He does also use the Bayer product in the blue bottle, but can't think of the name right now. Other than that, he said pretty much the same things Mitch stated.
