Calliandra
Hello everyone,
Two weekends ago my girlfriend, myself and our Bonsai Sensei got together to work on a Calliandra which I had purchased from a retiring member of our local club. I´d like to share the pictures of what we worked and hope to get your opinions. I hope you enjoy these!
Pictures of the Tree on the day I purchased it - April 4th 2011
A bird standing on one of its branches and posing for the picture - June 5th 2011
Before starting work on it - June 12th 2011
Our Sensei cleaning the deadwood with dremel after some prunning - June 12th 2011
My girlfriend and I getting ready for some serious trunk cleaning - June 12th 2011
After cleaning, more prunning, branch anchoring, wiring - June 12th 2011
Our Sensei repotting. The tree was very pot bound after just a year since its last transplant. - June 12th 2011
We decided to change its pot, and mixed better draining soil. - June 12th 2011
After working on it, we put it in a "pool" with hormone for 2-3 hours. It was then left in a partly shaded area for 5 days before taking it out into full sun. It is now starting to bud in several branches. This is a fast growing specie so we expect it to boom quickly. I will start fertilizing with 12-24-12 during the 3rd week of july for it to be with flower for our club´s Exposition on the 20th & 21st of August. What do you guys think? Hope you enjoyed.

Lovely tree! I hope you were able to keep the old Chinese pot - its an old classic and perhaps at least 100 years old. Does the person you bought the tree know much about the pot?

Todd

Not so fast Todd. Someone has that same pot for sale on ebay now claiming it's 150 - 250 years old. Don't believe it for one minute. I saw stacks of them in Japan, where they are referred to as "Canton" pots, from southern China. I saw many honest to God antique Canton pots too, this isn't one of them. They are still being made today, great pots, but NOT "old". I have two myself. Neither this pot, nor the one on ebay has the patina of an old Canton pot.
AK, great start with this tree!

Todd, please understand I mean no offense - age and value are important and I don't want to see innocent misinformation passed along. As for the poor suckers on ebay...
Peter Krebs has plenty of info about real antique Chinese pots, check out his site.

No offence taken; I know there are reporductions out there and I am no expert by any means. I do know that these glazed Chinese pots are more scarce now than they use to be. I will look on Peter Krebs' site.

Re: Calliandra
Actually, this pot isn't a reproduction in the true sense of the word. They are using the same moulds, glazes and clay they've used for hundreds of years. The finished product has a rustic, old feel and people jump on that. THEY aren't trying to pass them off as old pots, but people here like that ebay seller are and do. He claims to have purchased it from "a very reputable Antiquities Dealer". Well, someone is lying or got lied to somewhere along the line, and someone else is about to buy a pig in a poke.

Thanks for the comments.
I did keep the pot and am expecting to use it for a Banyan style tree.
Can anyone share e websites on info about pots? I don't know much about antiques.

Go to the 4th and 5th pages of the pot forum and look at Peter Krebs' posts. He has links to pot info and pictures.
