Very Tiny Mushrooms Empty Very Tiny Mushrooms

Post  Jim Doiron Wed May 13, 2009 3:23 am

I'm not putting this in the Pests and diseases section because I'm not overly concerned with what it is or how to treat it (although if someone knows the particular form of fungus I would be happy to know it). I just thought I would post it for the sake of sharing it. This is a bursera fagaroides or elephant tree that some friends gave me years ago and I have managed to keep alive in various climes. I noticed today that the tiniest of mushrooms were growing on the sloughing skin at the soil. Cute little things but I went ahead and fungicided the soil just in case.

I'd be interest in hearing whether the fungicide works. In our wet climate all kinds of mushrooms appear on lawns, and the local master gardeners say that no treatment helps, because spores travel in the air, and also they have a network of underground roots. Yours seem to be growing on the tree bark, which must have a decaying outer layer for them to feed on, so maybe the fungicide will help. Did you pick them off first?

I know, I noticed the little white caps from a few feet away and thought it was soil that had splashed up. You can see they stand out a little in the larger picture. Luckily I have a fairly good camera.

These are growing on the dead layers that are pealing off but I noticed it on a spot of dead root also. I did not pick them off because I felt, at this point, it was probably useless and just let the fungicide do it's job. We are definitely going through some spring rains right now I have been trying to keep this one on the drier side but with these intermittent showers everyday it's hard to keep moving the tree under cover. On another tree I don't think I would bother treating it but since this is a caudiciform I was worried it was a sign of too much water. I will let you know if it works (although it may be next spring before I'm sure)

Stop it, just stop Laughing

I did have a beautiful kusamono in Michigan that developed these amazingly red button top mushrooms so for a split second I did think of trying to harvest them, then I my rational brain spoke up.

Very Tiny Mushrooms Empty Feather mushrooms

I added this to a past thread because of the subject matter, I hope that is Kosher (I guess it's my original thread so maybe it's up to me to decide.)

I found these yesterday on a forsythia stump and thought they were cool enough to try and photograph.

I think i saw somthing like this on a hike the other day. It was on a dead tree in the woods in a split in the tree. There was quite a bit of it in about a foot long crack and about 1 inch wide. When i ran a stick across it, so many spores came out it looked like smoke. I dont really understand where they came from because they almost looked like little blades of grass. I am hoping someone knows what this is.

When I saw the picture of it growing in moss, I thought of irish/scotch moss (Sagina subulata). Seeing grow on the dead wood, I'm not so sure...
