Korean Boxwood second styling Empty Korean Boxwood second styling

Post  jersanct Wed Jun 01, 2011 4:35 am

I gave this Korean box its second styling over the holiday weekend. While I plan to let individual foliage pads fill in from here, I intend to preserve the open structure, so the internal branch lines can be seen.

I would be happy for any comments or criticisms - thanks very much for looking.

Looks good. Any chance of some pics from all round the tree?

Great tree. Did the nursery stock come from Cass? Noticed you were in St. Louis. They had some very nice box last time I visited. I picked up a few for the Tulsa club to use in a Jim Doyle workshop.

Again, nice job!

What a beautiful little boxwood! Wonderful movement in the trunk and branches. I love what you've done with it, as well as your future plans.

You did a great job with this one Chris.

I look forward to seeing an updated photo of the tree when you get it in it's new pot.

Thanks for your kind comments, everyone.

Paul - I can't wait to get it into your pot - I'll be sure to post an updated photo at repotting. I don't know how to do the computer wizardry required to paste your pot into a photo of the tree, but I should take a photo of the pot itself so people can see it.

Neil - Yes, you're exactly right--this one came from that batch you saw at Cass. Of course, I think I grabbed the best one! All of those trees were beautiful, though.

Fiona - your wish, as always, is my command.

.....and cheap to boot!

I have one as well, but I've made some harder cut backs. I'll post later perhaps.

Again,
Nice work.

Thanks again for the kind comments, Neil. Yes, the tree was ridiculously cheap. I think Cass picked up that load from a nursery in Texas, and they must be brilliant with boxwoods, because they all were absolutely gorgeous trees. Is yours still in the original pot, planted in all the sand? I love having my bonsai friends pick up the tree--I watch their faces carefully so I can see the moment when they realize that it weighs about thirty pounds more than they had expected.

...yes, those suckers are heavy. They had a load of pretty nice shimpakus as well, which is what I went for originally. I believe those came from the same nursery in Texas.

Thanks for sharing.

After another round of growing/thinning/wiring...I removed that branch that had been growing straight up to the right of the apex, and it's a better tree for it, I think. Some of the leaves are also becoming very, very small. As always, I'm happy for any comments or criticism. Thanks for looking.

Nice tree! I don't remember seeing this thread before, so I'm glad you posted the update.

What size is the tree (approximate height)?

Korean boxwood, Buxus harlandii? Or Japanese boxwood, Buxus microphylla? Which ever, it is a really pretty boxwood.

Hello everyone...thanks again for your kind comments.

Chris - this tree is about 16" tall

Russell - this was sold to me as Korean box, and I certainly don't know any better. It did come from a knowledgeable nursery, which bought it from another nursery that grows a bunch of these trees, so I would tend to believe their diagnosis. I really wouldn't know the difference, personally.

Thanks for looking, everyone.

Not to rain on your parade but I'm not so sure this is a Korean Boxwood (Buxus harlandii)- the foliage seems to big and the wrong shape. Here's a close up of the foliage on an old one I have that was used as a mother plant. The foliage is about one and a half times the size of kingsville and half the size of common Japanese Boxwood Buxus microphylla. But like Russels says pretty tree either way.

Hello Bob...don't worry about my parade...it doesn't matter to me one way or the other, really. And thank you for the compliment. I don't know--I'm not questioning you, I'm just saying that I truly don't know--if we can tell much from the leaf size, because all of my leaves are in various stages of reduction, and I don't know if the size of your leaves has been affected by your years of cultivation, but the shape looks different than yours, as you say. Thanks for posting the photo. I may post some close-up photos of my leaves later, too, and maybe one of you can confirm what I have.

Your boxwood is coming along very nicely.

I can see you made good progress with it over the summer.

Brian and Paul - thanks very much for your compliments. Paul, we'll see if it's ready for your pot in the Spring or not. I might decide to keep the guy wires (anchored to the nursery pot) in place for a while longer, but I can't wait to see how it looks in the pot. I think it has developed fairly quickly over the summer--I'm amazed at how quickly you can develop boxwood and reduce the leaves, and I'm surprised that it isn't used for bonsai more often. I believe you have told me that you are a boxwood fan, right?

Russell - thank you for posting the photos. Definitely my leaves don't have that indentation at the tip that the Korean box has in your photos. Then again, Bob's Korean box leaves don't have those indentations, either! So we've solved that, then. Sort of. This is nearly as fun as the debate we've had over on my Niigata yew thread.
