Siberian Larch Pruning

Post  zante on Sun May 22, 2011 3:21 am

I have just bought a Siberian Larch from a Nursery. It's about 24" high. I have read that I shouldn't re-pot this time of year, but I was wondering if I should prune? It is in great shape and is very healthy looking.

Unless Siberian is vastly different to European, which I don't think it will be then pruning and most top work is fine this time of year. Wiring as well but you will trap some needles but its OK. No root work until the dormant season.

From what I could see on Wikimedia, it looks very similar to the European larch.

For me, the best time for repotting is just before buds break out, when they begin to swell and show a little green but the needles are not out yet.

I killled some Dunkel larch one year because I repotted them too early, and yet they were protected from the frost.

I'm curious. Where in Canada are you? Why did you buy a Siberian larch from a nursery instead of an American larch, preferably a collected one?

Thank you everyone for your help! Iris, I chose the siberian as the weather where I am is very unpredictable and not as warm as other parts of the country.

Where are you, Yellowknife? Question Both L. siberica and L. laricina are hardy to Zone 2. Some authorities list L. laricina for Zone 1. They both march to the treeline. It should be interesting to see how your tree works as a bonsai.

I'm in Zone 3 in the Rockies. I should have probably picked a different larch but this one caught my eye!
