Joshua Roth tools? Empty Joshua Roth tools?

Post  DreadyKGB Thu May 05, 2011 5:23 am

Hey all,
I am looking to get a few new tools, the cheap Chinese ones I have now are just not up to par anymore. The problem is that I don't have a whole lot of money to spend. I was thinking about purchasing a concave cutter and knob cutter by Joshua Roth which I found at a reasonable price. Does any one have experience with these tools? I'm looking at the novice models. How do these tools compare? Does any one recommend another reasonably priced brand? Thanks

I don't have any Joshua Roth tools so I will not comment there, but I will say that I have found very little use for a "knob cutter." I do have one, but I can't remember ever using it. When bonsai people discuss tools I suppose it get as interesting as a discussion of soil. But, I would get a spherical concave cutter of medium size and a good pair of bonsai shears. The spherical concave cutter has a more rounded blade than the traditional concave cutter. I have been doing this a while and have a large collection of tools, but those are the two I use most. The others are a good pair of tweezers for weeding and a fork for clearing soil and working in fertilizer.

I am very please with my Joshua Roth tools. My tools are still going strong ten years after buying my set. I clean and sharpen them once a year and they perform well. I will get the stainless steel tools after I win the lottery Laughing . The Knob cutter comes in very handy; I use it often for carving our areas where I removed branch and root stubs close to the trunk. After carving out the rough, a chisel or grinder will clean up the rest.

Hey Todd,

Had a friend get a concave cutter all the way from the USA to India for me. Have been using it for sometime now. Great one. I am sure that the rest of them are as good if not better.

Close your eyes and go for them. I am sure you will not regret...

When I do Bonsai, 99 % of the time I have a straight up concave cutter in my hand. If I was limited to only ONE tool with which to work I would pick that one. The knob cutter is nice for carving out large cuts back to the trunk line, or if you do a trunk reduction to help "sculpt" back from the initial flat cut. Its my close second and is usually close by, but as I say I do almost everything with my concave. Get a spherical concave cutter and you have the best of both. When I started out I got a whole tool set, Looking back I could have just bought a nice spherical concave cutter and spent the rest on wire.
