I was just wonderinging what the care would be for a Russian olive tree can it be grown in my green house? I live in a apartment so I don't have a porch to winter my bonsai. So all my bonsai are tropical and are in a green house rack I have powered by t5ho and metal haylide.

Russian Olive, Elaeagnus angustifolia, is a temperate tree and undoubtedly requires a dormant period. I don't think it would do well as an indoor bonsai. You could try a small one and winter it in the refrigerator. If you want an olive, choose European olive, Olea europaea. It likes a cool rest in the fall, but does not require a real dormancy.

Considered an invasive species east of the Cascade Range, but unable to survive in the wild here on the west side, a little too warm and wet in the winter. They do well in a container though, but definitely an outdoor plant. I made this when I didn't know better and keep it to remind me that not all plants are good for bonsai.

My Elaeagnus angustifolia has rested nicely with my other temperate deciduous trees. They stayed in a drafty shed, out of the direct sunlight and got watered whenever we had a warm spell over freezing. It has been outside in the elements for a month now and doing nicely.
