Re: Collected Berberis...
Hello Mario.
You could cut two third of it away
but as its is, it is charming.

Re: Collected Berberis...
I agree with Sunip. IMHO it will do well at its current full height but I'm also seeing potential for a great shohin sized tree just where the larger bud is coming out on the right about a third of the way up. Let us know how it progresses though please, whatever you do with it.

Hello all
Fiona and Sunip - Thanks for your opinion.
I understand your idea, and it´s defenetly an idea for the future.
Right now, my main focus it´s the recovery of the tree, although in this species that´s not a challenge.
I will let it grow freely during this season, no prunes, nothing, just good old TLC.
Next leaf fall, i will choose the main structure and maibe then i will reduce the height of the tree.
Greetings

Re: Collected Berberis...
Hmmm
Getting convinced...
But like that the tree wil be about 2" after the chop. Isn´t that just too small?

Re: Collected Berberis...
I have also a berberis from nursery stock. I've been having this small tree for 2,5 years now.
I have realized in practice that its branches are so very much... stubborn. They just grow heading upwards!!!
They pay no attention to wire and bending....
So I've come to the conclusion that only clip and grow could work with it.
Does anyone have similar experience or any advice, please?
Thank you!

Hi Mario
Yes, this is very small..let it grow free, for two, or tree years, but take very good care of the low shots, as this is the ones, you want to keep.
My Nellie
This is a very nice way to create this kind of bonsai, this is what I prefer to do, I am not really into wire, if I can do without.
Kind regards Yvonne

Well, i do wire them, but take care to remove on time.
I also use guy wire to bend them down.
But clipping is really important to get ramification.
Also on the small branches they tend to make shoots vertically,
those i wire to.

Re: Collected Berberis...
Sunip, thank you!
I cannot really comprehend what is the problem with my berberis. I did use guy wires, too....
Anyway, I can say that I do prefer traditional methods best So, clip and grow is fine with me.
But just for the record, when exactly (season, time of year) do you apply the wires and how long (more or less) do you keep them on this tree?
Thank you!

Re: Collected Berberis...
Hello
I have some more berberis and i use wire on them.
Normally i wire immediatly after leaf fall e keep the wire for as long as i can (usually i cut it away by mid/late spring).

Re: Collected Berberis...
Mario, thanks for your reply!
And do you feel content with the results of the wire on your berberis?
The timing you describe sounds exactly like the one I applied, but I didn't get the result I aimed for....
I'm such an egoist....
I hacked your thread and I didn't even say that I agree with Yvonne, Fiona and Sunip about cutting your tree over those lower shots.
I do apologise, Mario.

Hi all,
Alexandra,
I apply wire all year when necessary.
Young shoots ar of course best, they do not need long wiring.

Re: Collected Berberis...
Hi all
Alexandra - No problem in using my topic.
The results i get with wiring Berberis are not perfect but they are fairly good.
Some branches tend to get to their original positions after the wire has been removed, but it´s just a matter of wiring again next fall.
Like it´s a very vigurous species i dont like to leave the wire for too much time and i dont like to wait untill the folliage is too compact to remove the wire.

Hi Mário
Going well i see.
On the one year old branches they flower, so maybe next year
on the branches that you will choose in your design to stay.
