It took a few years of prunning back to shorten the branches of this monstruous fagus. Now, I am starting to build the crown...and it will take another five years. But, at the end, I believe it will be worth the effort.

More story of my big fagus here: http://sandevbonsai.blogspot.com/2011/04/fagus-queenmonster-in-spring-outfit.html

Nice tree and Great result. It s not easy to achieve such backbudig on a Fagus Sylvatica.
And for shore the 5 years will be worth the effort.

It would be very interesting to hear how you achieved such good result with the backbuding.

Well Roland, there was no big wisdom here...the tree just wanted to backbud strongly. First year after collecting the tree produced hundreds of buds deeper on the bases of the branches, on the trunk, around wounds and cuts...feeding was aggressive that's the truth. But, seeing this tree in nature with such number of fat basal branches emerging from the trunk showed already the pattern....this individual plant likes to produce buds from everywhere. Plants are individuals, also. Not two faguses are the same. Well, like people. Otherwise, it would be unexplainable how two same trees collected on the same site and grown in same conditions...one eventuly dies, and other one becomes great bonsai and growes like hell Smile
Don't you think so?

Hi Sebastijan Sandev

I enjoy very much to see your huge, very, very nice collected trees....and this fagus is awesome, I cant wait to see it with the crown.
Two weeks ago, I found a fagus too, also big, and very, very nice....when is it the best time to dig it up?

Kind regards Yvonne

Ivonne! apsolutely the best time to collect the fagus is when cigar buds start to elongate...in other words, SPRING before leaves unfurl.
Fagus is very spoiled species of trees in time of collecting and first basic prunnings...but once it takes root in a pot and produces a mass of buds, almost indestructible

Ivonne...one more thing...take care not to cut all branches with all the buds from the tree. It is apsolutely essential to leave at least one or two LAST YEAR'S ACTIVE CIGAR SHAPED BUDS on each branch that you will cut short. Otherwise, the branch will dieback severely, and if you do the same with all the branches, you will loose whole tree. Beeches are very sensitive to that. Always leave at least one or two last years active buds (shape like a cigar) on each branch that you intend to keep alive. If you need shorter branches, you will cut them next year when the tree produce back buds closer to the trunk
