Tim, no, I used my Droid Incredible. It was indoors so the lighting was bad. I just didn't have the time to fetch my Nikon!

John, have you considered light thinning the bottom 1" of the exposed roots?

Lovely tree. I personally would either thin the very bottom roots or place the tree lower in the pot.

Thanks for the virtual, Jaco. It will probably end up being a combination of these two approaches.

is it possible for azaleas to grow on rocks? I am imagining an exposed root azalea clinging on a rock.?

I would leave the tree alone and not shorten the roots. its nice the way it is. if anything, the roots could be could be a bit taller.

Exposed root is not my favourite bonsai style but I'd happily make this tree the exception to the rule. It has a delicate filigree quality to it which lifts it above the ordinary. The flowers are also delicate and complement the rest of the tree. Also, if I remember correctly from the N Carolina Expo pics John Geanangel posted last October, this tree looks equally good even when not in flower. Maybe you'd care to share a pic of it unclothed as it were.
